Steam Powered Machine Shop looking for steam power

Seeing how the New York shop is closed for the winter, I put together some clips of last summer that ended up on the cutting room floor. I spent several years as a "regular" volunteer with the great organization, Friends of East Broad Top Railroad jacking up buildings, digging out machinery and generally keeping it's great history from decay until its recent rebirth as the only all original nar...

Up next are some clips from the steam powered shop fabricating 3 gears for a n early 1920's gasoline pump restoration. There will be other parts to follow that were in just as rough shape. The editing is a little rough here also because support for the program I've been using from the beginning had been abandoned by the maker and wouldn't work when I loaded it into a new computer. This one is a...

Video No. 83 in a series from my operating, steam powered, 1925 machine shop concerns repair of a second steam whistle for the shop. This project was done at my Florida winter residence (hide-out). It involved making a missing steam valve, lever and bracket. Thanks for watching. Comments, questions and discussion of steam power, line shaft power transmission and old machine tools are always wel...
Steam Powered Machine Shop 83: 32" Shaper Work

Fuel, water and time were running out during the last days of the season before the shop was closed and winterized. I was able to complete a few operations on the new crosshead for the Liley steam engine that I've been rebuilding. The job seemed to lend itself well to the 32" G&E shaper in the front shop. Comments, questions and discussion of old machine shop work, steam power and line shaft po...

Work done in my shop for hire to show how a small "job" machine shop under steam power might have looked in 1925. I also followed a cylinder head job for a vintage farm tractor in my modern engine "front shop". As always all comments , questions and discussion concerning old machine work, steam power or line shaft power are always welcome. You can check shop news and interesting posts on my "Co...

It's hard to believe this is #80 video of my shop at work to show you how line shafts, steam power and old method machine work was done 100 years ago. This one continues with the fabricating of a gear box shaft for a round hay bailer, a new design cross head for the Liley steam engine build and some clips of work in the front "engine" shop. As always, comments questions and discussion of steam ...
Steam Powered Machine Shop 79 Shop Work

The steam powered machine shop was put together to demonstrate how things might have been done in a 1925 in a small shop. Number 79 shows how I sleeved a hit & miss engine cylinder back to size for the original piston on a newer 1939 electric powered horizontal boring mill and turned some diameters to repair a round hay bailer shaft on the 1925 American Tool Works lathe under steam shop power. ...

This video is #78 in a series in my shop that I put together to depict a small "job" machine shop of 1925 vintage running on steam power. Probably the only working machine shop under steam power in North America. This episode deals with some of the work backlog of modern engine cylinder heads, etc. Work on the 1910 Liley steam engine will resume next video. All questions and comments about stea...
OLD STEAM POWERED MACHINE SHOP 77 LOOKING BACK

In this video during the winter break, I went back as far as 5 years to look as some of the jobs and projects done in my representative 1925 "job" machine shop. I also commented on the origin of my main shop building and some of it's history in my small "upstate" New York town. I hope you enjoy it and join the discussion in the comments section. You can also see news and other shop related stor...
Old Steam Powered Machine Shop 76: Rebuilding a steam engine
Переглядів 71 тис.2 роки тому
Video # 76 from my shop, built to depict a general 1925 "job" machine shop using steam power from a time when municipal electric power was not yet available. Most of the shop runs on steam only, supplied by a 1924 Mundey steam hoist vertical boiler and a 1902 8"x11" steam engine built by Richards Iron Works , WI. Most of the machines and leather belts are well over 100 years old. I am presently...

Old Steam Powered Machine Shop #75. The Lily steam engine cylinder head, slide valve and steam chest cover are remachined on a shaper, lathe and planer using only steam power in my 1925 line shaft, steam powered shop. Have you ever thought of using a knob, shaft, and bearing through the whole of a crescent wrench for keeping pressure on the wrench as goes round and round?
I wish I could spend some time picking your brain for all of the old school ways of doing things. More and more of it is lost to history every day. The knowledge that you have is priceless. Thank you for making these videos.
Is everything ok!!?? It’s been 3 months since last video. I made time to watch your videos they are very interesting and just so addicting. Just seeing what it might have been like back then is just mind boggling that they could do the things you show back in the late 1800’s early 1900. Well anyway hope you are ok and look forward to your next video.
Dear sir... I am a 36 year old, classically (manual) trained Tool and Die Maker from Virginia. I somehow stumbled upon your very first video and have now fallen into the rabbit hole that is UA-cam. Where is the D.R.O (Digital Read out) on your machines? Haha I'm kidding. What you have built for yourself is everything that I aspire to do for myself except I have to have dial indicators because I have OCD. I will watch every single one of your videos for sure. Thank you for taking the time to share your shop with us.
Nice!
Que precio tiene una barra de metal blanco para rebabitar
I send these processes and techniques to my Grand Son at Industrial Design School. At 75y and a practicing product producer this thinking in our times off cnc an ai is off great nessesity. Bit off a shock to see what came out off the box gosh…..
Its good!
Apart from making something original machine on your dream setup with your brand name cast into it,next a major automatic CO2 fire 🔥 system that includes Foam.
The slide valve looks good, I’ll draw up similar for the reciprocating double action air pump.
Hope we see more off that lovely gear shift on the horizontal mill.
No it doesn’t look better. I want a refund. That shaper did it perfectly, function over cosmetic, less you touch it the BETTER.
Hey Dave! I've been watching" reruns" of the show. Hope you are well!
At last I’v seen a dividing head being setup and used. Phew….
Loved it even down to the Chuck Key Holder. Could have been a bit off a Steam Pipe with a proper cast bracket tho.
Just got onto Ebay Audels volume 1to7. Good timing as about to draw up a 300mm dia reciprocating low temp inline air displacer, heat retrieval for a product that has a foot in the past and foot in the future. Had it running for fourty years 6 hours aday so time to put it’s offspring on the world market. Most Excellent Vid….
20240524y watched three sofar no way too stop.. Watching those tools breathing away together, a quite relaxing symphony in motion. Never would have imagined how sophisticated they were. The greengreyblue color perfect. You could do with an oil rag hanging out back pocket. An 8year old helper would take this setup into the future and beyond.
if i can guess what make the whistle is can i buy it? a crosby 4" three tone chime..
rreally interesting ..i am a steam nut myself . in my early days i was on the foot plate a fireman after two weeks my beer belly vanished we in england still have over 1.000 steam loco motives of all sorts what do you think of our burrell scenic showmans engines. a thing of beauty.. regards laurence
Being a middle aged bachelor this is great stuff. Less time cooking more time spannering. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
Have you seen Iron Jonsey UA-cam of a wheel making machine All the best Peter
binge waching all of these videos ❤ this channel!
To use copper coins as shims is a great idea when no copper sheet metal us to hand.
Great video
I worked at a shop that still had the shafting in the ceiling and had 2 Monarch lathes that were converted to electric and used Ford transmission gearboxes. They had been scraped and refurbished several years before I was there and still held .001 tolerance with ease. This is the first time that I've seen the steam powered machines operate, love how you do your work.
I'm just a young man at 49 and have been machining for 31yrs
Thanks Greg, glad you are aboard.....Dave
Ha ha I just saw you on the highway. I was in the U-Haul. 😂 edited sorry if I scared you guys honking.
impressive
Nice shop and a man with alot of knowledge !!👌
Do steam engines require only clean water to run or can you use brown river water?
The sediment will concentrate in the boiler and lead to some serious safety problems, so you would need to Open the boiler's bottom drains and "blow down" a considerable amount of water out regularly while running. Also shut the boiler down, remove the inspection hole "hand holes" covers and spray wash it out regularly. If the water is really bad, you might need some kind of filter or use rain water. PH should be adjusted to about 9.0 with Potash or boiler treatment. .....Dave
Thanks Dave enjoyed it
Great
I hate finding a you tube channel I really like and then just to find out the person retired from you tube and stopped making videos!!!!!! DAMNIT MAN THIS SUCKS!!
nice job.
G’day Dave greetings from Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺 I don’t know why but I lost your channel and I stumbled across it and I subscribed it’s great to see you again even if your not in your terrific work shop. I look forward to watching the channel , kind regards John
Thanks Dave. Hurry back to NY
Thanks for sharing dave really enjoyable
Good to see you again, Dave. I like that big new cross peen hammer you got there. Score it at a yard sale? Think I saw the sticker still on it. Love this video; it reminds me of many of the small jobs I do here at home on my Chinese mini lathe.
I was like HEY,,,Wheres Mr Richards,,, Glad to see you back at it..
Why are there not post being put up?
Your skills never cease to amaze me. You are a great craftsman and I thoroughly enjoy all your videos. Thank you David.
So did you brass plate the lever or is that paint?
That gold paint looks pretty good in the photos.
Love it! Doing the work like they did 100 years ago. Marvelous work
Another fine job, even if it was only 3 cents worth. Just kidding, you make that 2 hand contouring look so easy.👍
I do love watching brass turn! Especially with some nice bright light, and shiny chips flying around! Poetry.
Great job Dave.
Ggood seeing ya. Always enjoy! Excellent repair work also.
Saying hello from the left coast of the U.S. , just finished a similar project on my 1950 Logan 10 “ . 😊. If you had been a month earlier with this video you would have saved me a lot of head scratching , LOL ! But thanks anyway .
Thanks Dave from the great white north Hope BC Canada. Too cold to go out and warm my big shop up .
Wonderful video. Love watching you work. Very cool project. Please do us a favor and don't film in front of the window because the glare is horrible.
